What Is a Bear Bag?

A bear bag is a lightweight sack you fill with food and smellables, then hang high in a tree at night so critters cannot reach it. It is the ultralight answer to the heavy plastic canister. A good backpacking food bag keeps your meals organized during the day and safe after dark, all for a few ounces instead of a few pounds.

Choosing an Ultralight Food Bag

Match the bag to the trip. A weekend needs less volume than a week on trail. Here is what we tell our own customers:

  • Volume: plan on roughly a liter of food per person per day, plus a little wiggle room.
  • Weather: a roll-top closure sheds rain and dew far better than a drawstring.
  • Weight: Dyneema shaves the most grams, our everyday fabrics trade a hair of weight for a lower price.
  • Hanging: look for a reinforced tie-out so your line does not tear the bag when it is loaded.

Dyneema vs Everyday Fabrics

Dyneema is the featherweight champ: crazy strong, naturally water resistant, and about as light as a fabric gets. Our everyday food bags cost less and still hold up to years of trail abuse. Weight weenies reach for Dyneema. Folks who want tough gear at a friendlier price grab the standard fabric. You cannot go wrong either way, and both are made by hand in our shop.

Build a Reliable Bear Hang System

A food bag is only half the job. To actually get it 12 feet up and 4 feet from the trunk, pair it with a proper bear hang kit: a rock sack, a throw line, and a way to lock it off. New to hanging? Our step-by-step PCT method guide walks you through it.

Bear Bag FAQ

Is a bear bag as safe as a canister? A properly hung bear bag protects your food from most critters and black bears. Some areas legally require a hard-sided canister, so always check local regulations before you go.

How big should my food bag be? For most solo hikers a 10 to 15 liter bag covers three to five days. Going longer or feeding two people? Size up.

Are these bags waterproof? Our roll-top Dyneema bags are highly water resistant and shrug off rain and dew. For full submersion protection, line the bag or use a dry bag inside.

Where are they made? Every bag is cut and sewn by hand in our USA shop. No overseas mass production, just real people making gear they actually use.
